SupplySide Sustainability Program | Environmental Impact

Here's what we're doing at the show this year.

SupplySide West is pursuing CarbonNeutral® Event Certification for the first time at our 2022 event in Las Vegas. Going carbon neutral means that we continue reducing our greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible, and compensate for the remaining carbon emissions our show emits (from travel, hotel stays, energy-use, waste, etc.) through the purchase of high-quality ICROA-approved carbon offsets.

What is a CarbonNeutral® Event Certification?

A designation that demonstrates our event has achieved carbon neutrality in line with the CarbonNeutral Protocol. This certification is administered by Climate Impact Partners, and is a global standard managed for over 20 years to deliver clean, conclusive, and transparent carbon neutral programs. The carbon footprint of our event is verified by a third-party company, Bureau Veritas. This initiative is part of the FasterForward - Faster to Zero commitment to becoming completely carbon neutral as a business by 2025 by our parent company, Informa.

CarbonNeutral® Event Sponsor: Nutriterra®

Nutriterra® Total Omega-3, An Ocean of Nutrition within a Canola Seed
Derived from Nuseed® Omega-3 Canola, Nutriterra is a plant-based source of seven long-chain fatty acids, including DHA, EPA, and ALA. This sophisticated biotechnology reduces pressure on marine resources. Just 1-2 hectares of Nuseed Omega-3 canola produce as much DHA as 10,000 one kg fish! Nutriterra unlocks the power of plants to solve environmental challenges and is proud to sponsor SSW carbon neutrality.

  • SupplySide West is powered by 100% renewable electricity making the electricity use carbon neutral.
  • We use an established global process to pay a premium to renewable electricity producers. These Energy Attribution Certificates (EACs) allow us to match our electricity usage with the required amount of green energy. This creates additional incentives for generators to invest in renewable power. We are still trying to use less electricity overall for our events, but this process ensures it’s as sustainable as possible
  • The energy efficiency at SupplySide West has been increased through initiatives such as shutting off hall lighting and booth power overnight and using technology so that escalators power down when not in use.
  • Mandalay Bay provides energy efficient lighting within the expo halls

SupplySide West attendees can stay healthy and hydrated by using their re-usable water bottles at sustainable water stations throughout the expo hall. By taking part, you are helping to reduce the carbon and waste generated by single-use water bottles. It’s estimated that 8-9 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year –the equivalent of one garbage truck of material every minute. Thank you for choosing to re-use in an effort to keep our oceans plastic-free. [NOAA] These water stations are provided by our Official Water Sustainability Sponsor: Aker BioMarine.

Aker BioMarine is a biotech innovator and Antarctic krill-harvesting company, dedicated to improving human and planetary health. Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, and we have initiatives to reduce our CO2 footprint and have full circularity on our waste streams. Water conservation and protection is essential for life on the planet. We continuously track our water usage and have initiatives to reduce water and chemicals in production to minimize our environmental impact.

  • Aisle Carpet has been removed from the expo halls, saving 331,693 sq. ft of carpet, padding, and visqueen.
  • Designated cardboard drop-off areas are placed throughout the show floor to increase recycling efforts.
  • Recycle & Landfill bins are placed throughout the SupplySide event.
  • SupplySide West partners with Terracycle for lanyard and badge recycling. When you place your lanyard and badge in one of the recycling bins, they will be sent to Terracycle, where they will be sorted, cleaned, and separated by material. Their warehouse then organizes and prepares the items for processing, and each part of the badges and lanyards are treated appropriately (metals are smelted into new products, plastic materials are shredded into small pieces and converted into pellets and other raw formats). Your badges and lanyards are saved from landfills and transformed into new products!
  • The use of polybags has been eliminated from expo previews, resulting in 32,000 plastic bags no longer being used as covers.
  • Mandalay Bay sorts all trash prior to pickup to maximize waste diverted from landfill.
  • Falcon Board (cardboard based material) is used for printed show signs.
  • Digital Kiosks are used and help reduce printed advertising.
  • SupplySide collaborates with general service contractor to re-use structures and signage for future events.

  • Expo Previews, Show Directories and other materials are printed on recycled paper
  • The printed Show Directory has been redesigned to maximize efficiency of paper usage, and there is increased promotion towards downloading a digital version and utilizing the event’s mobile app.
  • Exhibitors and sponsors are encouraged to share information digitally rather than through printed materials.
  • Lanyards are made from PET recycled materials (plastic bottles and other plastic packaging)
  • Mandalay Bay has discontinued the 7oz plastic cups & only uses plain, compostable white cups for all water stations. Additionally, they use all Leafware products which are 100% compostable. A variety of vegan and vegetarian options are offered during food and beverage functions.
